Alex Cowley first became interested in photography in his early teens and what started as a hobby soon became a passion. After studying Photography and Design and beginning his career in the UK, Alex moved to Australia in 2001.
Initially settling in Sydney, Alex worked as an image retoucher while continuing to develop his skills as a photographer. In 2005 Alex became a member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP). Within his first year he was awarded the prestigious Canon/AIPP Australian Landscape Photographer of the Year award and was selected as a finalist for the Canon/AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of Year award.
In 2009 Alex went on to become the AIPP NSW Landscape Photographer of the Year and a finalist in the International Aperture awards. The following year he was made a Master of Photography by the AIPP in recognition of his work. To date Alex has received over thirty awards at state and national level for his photography.
While in Sydney, Alex also began supplying material to Better Digital Camera magazine, one of Australia’s leading digital photography publications, rapidly becoming their major contributor. In 2008 he became their Feature Editor, a role in which he remained until 2012. Working freelance, Alex now regularly contributes to several photography publications including Better Photography and Camera magazine.
In addition to his photography, Alex operates as a commercial retoucher and matt painter. He has worked on numerous high profile advertising accounts. These include: Rebel Sport, Amart All Sports, Tooheys Extra Dry, Hahn Super Dry, Nutella, and Molenberg Bread.
Alex now lives in a rural town in northern NSW where he able to capture some of the most spectacular scenery the region has to offer.
